5 Ways to Control Your Environment and Achieve Consistency
Have you ever been told to “control your environment” if you want to be successful with your fitness goals?
Sounds like good advice (it is) but usually there is no context behind the advice, so it ends up not being helpful.
Would you honestly say right now that you feel in control of your environment each day? Or are you under the control of others?
Kids? Responsibilities? Family?
Do you allow those to mostly tell you what to do, where to be, and at times, even what to eat?
It’s no secret…
If you want to be successful at anything in life…
If there’s an outcome you desire…
No one just wants to lose 20lbs or just wants to tone up.
There is a feeling that you desire that you have attached to that outcome.
There are things right now that you feel you cannot do because you are not in the shape you want to be in.
You want to feel confident. Energetic. Calm. Attractive. Reliable. In control.
In order to achieve that version of you, the formula is always the same:
Be ruthlessly consistent for a really long time.
And yet, when I ask individuals what they struggle with the most, the answer I get 9 times out of 10 is…
Consistency.
It’s no wonder so many of us struggle to reach our goals.
If you want to gain control of your goals and feel the way you want to feel, start by changing your environment first.
In no particular order…
Here are 5 things you can do to start controlling your environment without ignoring your responsibilities or the people who depend on you.
Wake up first.
If possible, be the first person to wake up in your household. Even if it is only 15-20 min before others. Use this time to do ONE thing that will make you feel accomplished (not scrolling on your phone or watching the news.)
It could be as simple as having a protein shake or making a list of 3 things you wanna accomplish that day.
Maybe it is a walk or workout or packing your lunch.
If you live alone, wake up early enough that you are not rushing to work. Give yourself 20-30 min of calm time to accomplish something before you need to rush to start your day.
This simple morning action gives you an immediate feeling of control.
Eat protein first.
Simple.
Every meal or snack, eat a protein source first.
Why? Because protein helps fill you up and when you feel full you make better choices.
This controls what and how much you put in your mouth at each meal.
Gonna grab a cookie? Sure. Just eat a protein first.
Doing this 90% of the time changes the way you plan food and the way you eat which controls the food environment you live in.
Expand Your Timeline.
Change takes time.
Longer than any of us would like.
Stop expecting instant gratification.
What if you actually committed to being consistent for a long time regardless of the result?
For example, you’re going to be consistent with your workouts or nutrition plan for 6 months, regardless of what scale says on a daily basis.
Imagine where you’d be if you had that habit solidified.
By doing this, you are no longer under the control of the scale. The scale does not dictate your choices. You are running the show.
Be Brutally Honest with Yourself.
Want to truly be in control? Be honest.
You may be an honest person to others, but are you honest with yourself. This one personally took me years to improve.
Being honest with yourself is scary. It reveals what we don’t always want to see. But, this gives you the utmost control over your environment because you are no longer a slave to the stories you have told yourself.
Do you actually not have the time?
Do you actually “need” your daily wine or beer?
Are you truly “trying your best”?
Write down a description of your daily habits & thoughts and be brutally honest about it.
Does this match up with the badass, confident version of you we both know you are capable of being?
Invest in you
Put your money where your mouth is.
We all say we want to change our lives, but most rarely want to invest in themselves.
Pay a coach, or therapist, or trainer to help guide you.
This is not me telling you to work with me. In fact, hundreds of people will read this and I can only realistically handle 3-5 more clients at the moment.
But once you are investing in help, your entire approach will change almost overnight.
Because you have now injected accountability into your daily life.
No better way to control your environment than by having someone who is literally hired to support you.
The best part about your environment is that you are in control.
You can structure it in a way that facilitates consistency.
Make things easier on yourself.
That’s why investing in yourself and getting coached will always bring the greatest ROI you can imagine.
