The 3 Things Keeping You From Losing Weight
There are 3 Lies you have been told about fat loss that have unfortunately stalled progress over the years.
It’s not your fault for believing them.
In fact, I believed them for a long, long time as well.
These 3 lies are actually so ingrained in your mind that even as I explain them to you, every instinct in your body will want to disagree with me.
It’s ok. Pretty much every client that I have helped lose 15-30lbs and get lean, has initially fought me on this at first.
So before we go through them, I have one question to ask:
Have I done or said anything in the past to make you distrust me?
If the answer is “No”, then trust me on these.
Can we both agree that your body is built for survival?
Your body’s natural instinct is to keep you alive right?
So if any of your habits or choices make your body feel unsafe, you are working against your body correct?
So in order to see positive progress, we would likely see way better results if we worked WITH your body instead of against it?
Ok, glad we are on the same page.
Because the lies you have been led to believe all work AGAINST your body, which is why fat loss has been so difficult.
Lie #1: You need to eat LESS to weigh LESS
This probably makes logical sense when you think about it right?
I mean even I have consistently preached about the importance for a calorie deficit when it comes to fat loss.
Now the reason this is a LIE is because there is a massive difference between weight loss & fat loss.
If your goal is to look lean & toned, then you want to lose FAT.
When you focus solely on weight loss, there is a 90% chance you are gonna lose mostly muscle & water.
Remember, we want to work with your body not against it right?
If you are starving yourself, do you think your body or your metabolism will feel safe?
When we are told that we need to drink kale smoothies and live off of tuna & lettuce in order to lose weight, every primal instinct in our body goes into survival mode.
Survival mode means you ditch lean muscle.
Survival mode means high stress & cortisol.
Survival mode means high sugar cravings!
What?
Yes. When you go into survival mode, your body will try to trigger you to go eat something because you are working against it!
This is why you get sugar cravings!
Your body is trying to trick you into eating because it feels starved.
Literally, just yesterday, I had a busier afternoon than normal and missed a meal.
I didn’t eat from 10am til 6pm (which is super abnormal for me).
By 5pm I was craving every junk food you can think of.
This is after ONE day of eating too little!!
Imagine WEEKS.
If I had done that 2 days in a row, my diet would have gone to shit quick!
Lie #2: Your workouts need to crush you
Damn, I fell victim to this for YEARS.
Now, I am not saying that you shouldn’t workout hard.
You need to have some intensity in your training to trigger your body to adapt.
But, there is a difference between STIMULATING your body and ANNIHILATING your body.
I remember reading that sentence in a magazine over 15 years ago.
It was advice from a pro bodybuilder explaining how your training sessions should NOT destroy you.
I was a 17 year old kid looking for advice and read one of the most useful pieces of advice out there……but I didn’t listen!
I was like “that makes no sense!”
I thought it was a LIE!
I thought the magazine was just giving the “safe” advice.
SO I continued to wreck myself in the gym and complain that I wasn’t getting the results I wanted!
So I would keep doing more and getting less results.
Your workouts need to be effective.
They need to send a signal for your body to adapt.
You do this by pushing yourself right to your limit, then recovering, then progressing each week.
I would have seen SO much more progress if I took this advice 15 years ago.
If you are working out 5-6 days per week, doing a ton of burpees, and getting pushed to puke or “die” during your workouts…..you are working against your body!
Survival mode gets triggered.
Lie #3: Carbs cause fat gain
The first time I tracked my food was in 2014.
A coach prescribed me macros and I was told to eat 350g of carbs per day.
Every body dysmorphic instinct in my body told me this was TOO MUCH.
I could NOT hit this number.
I found it so difficult and stopped tracking after a couple of weeks cuz I thought it was stupid (sound familiar????)
Most of my nutrition beliefs were around LESS.
I was afraid to eat carbs and would always lean toward low carb approaches.
Then would complain about not getting results.
And, ironically, every weekend I would end up going “off the rails” and over indulge in pizza, desserts, or any form of “cheat” food.
Turns out, carbs are amazing for fat loss!
At 33 years old, I am in better shape and leaner than I was at 23 years old.
And now, I aim to eat almost or more than 400g of carbs per day!
Low carb means low energy.
Low energy works AGAINST your body.
Remember how I said every instinct you have is gonna want to fight me on this?
Right now you may be thinking that I am nuts and that you would rather do 100 Bulgarian Split Squats than spend one day forcing yourself to eat more carbs.
You can physically feel discomfort in your body right now at the mere thought of eating more rice or bread or potatoes everyday.
These are all tell tale signs of a damaged relationship with food.
I have been there.
Carbs fuel workouts.
Workouts stimulate lean muscle.
Lean muscle burns fat like an incinerator
Carbs are your friend.
Again, I know that you internally believe that low calorie, low carb, & high intensity classes are the path to a lean & toned body.
I used to think that too.
Until my metabolism was destroyed and I was a skinny fat dude with no strength who had to spend years rebuilding his muscle.
I had to reboot my metabolism and fix my relationship with food.
And now, I am in my best overall shape, maintaining fat loss, sleeping great, and eating a ton of carbs.
If any of this resonates, I wanna challenge you to just take ONE step toward change by replying “damn, that’s me”
