Why Your Calorie Deficit Isn’t Working—and What Really Matters

Is there anything more frustrating than doing everything “right” and still not making any progress with your body?

You’re like… WTF… I was told if I just stayed in a calorie deficit, I’d see results, and yet, it’s not happening.

So you think, maybe I need to tweak my calories just a little.

Still nothing.

Then you think, maybe I need to change things up completely.

Still nothing.

At this point, 1 of 2 things usually happens.

You either…

A. Go find a new strategy, hoping that this time it will work, or

B. Get frustrated, throw in the towel, and take a break before eventually starting the whole process over again.

But here’s the truth…

It’s never just about “plan” alone.

I recently had someone reach out to me about their struggles with nutrition.

They explained how they’ve been following their calorie goal religiously but weren’t seeing the results they expected.

I asked if they had ever worked with a coach or mentor before, and their response was…

“Why would I need one when I already know how many calories I need to be eating?”

Hmmmm… sounds like that’s not working for you, soooooo…

Anyway, I get it.

Most coaching plans out there are like cookie-cutter programs.

Here… follow these macros or calories and hope for the best.

Oh, it didn’t work? Well, here’s an adjustment to your numbers—try again.

But the real solution goes way beyond just calories.

There are countless calorie calculators online for free.

There’s no reason to pay money just to have someone tell you what you can easily find on the internet.

Once you understand where the real magic happens, it’ll become quite clear where you should focus your energy.

Without even knowing your exact situation, I can confidently tell you 5 things that are more important than your calorie goal.

In no particular order…

1. Your Mindset and Beliefs

I don’t care how perfect you are with calories… if your thoughts are working against you, you’re going to struggle. The way you think about the process directly impacts your results.

If you view it as a restrictive and difficult process, why would you stick to it?

2. Your Habits and Routine

Give me a strong foundation built on solid habits over quick-fix strategies any day. Habits are what carry you through long-term, while a calorie deficit is often a short-term intervention. Consistency and routine are key.

What if your daily habits supported fat loss even when you’re on auto pilot?

3. Managing Stress

The number one progress killer. Stress can derail your efforts in so many ways. It’s often ignored because it’s not as tangible, but managing stress effectively is crucial.

If you are chronically stressed, your body will have a lot of trouble prioritizing fat loss or muscle building.

4. Understanding Your Unique Situation

Most diets are one-size-fits-all, but that doesn’t work for everyone. Your unique situation, including your diet history, childhood trauma, daily schedule, and your available bandwidth matters. Tailoring your approach to fit you personally is vital for success.

5. Ditching the All-Or-Nothing Mentality

Thinking you need to be perfect is a common trap. If you don’t overcome that mindset, you’ll constantly feel like you’re failing. Learn to find balance, and you’ll be much happier and more successful.

Look, it may seem like I’m against tracking calories.

But that’s not the case. I just see it for what it is…

One tool in a toolbox full of options.

There’s a reason why many people come to me after trying and failing with just food tracking.

I understand what truly creates long-term success.

I don’t reduce people to just numbers and formulas.

I know that lasting results start in the mind and build from there.

If you want to build a lean, strong body while improving your relationship with food in the most sustainable and enjoyable way possible…

If you want to enjoy the process and never stress about it again…

If you want to feel your best and perform your best…

And you want to accomplish all of that in before 2025…

Then 1:1 coaching might be the right fit for you.

It’s perfect if you feel like you’re stuck and frustrated right now.

That’s where most of my clients start, and once they join my program, they never look back.
